Provocative, irreverent, roaring like a snow-ball the Chicks on speed (COS) are showing CULTURAL WORKSHIP NOW! at Kustraum kreuzberg/Bethanien (10.09- 23.10), the first ever large scale presentation of their work in Germany, from the 1990s up to the presnet day. The collective was founded on 1997 by Melissa Logan, Kiki Moorse (who has left the group) and Alex Murray Leslie, made its start in Munich as an experimental music group devoted to electroclash and then stretched out to other disciplines, from painting, to perfoming arts and fashion design, from traditional handicraft techniques to the latest technologies, all this by taking on borad many artists along the way, some of them well known, such as Douglas Gordon, Jeremy Scott, Karl Lagerfeld, some other up-and coming ( Vladimir Karaleev, Jasmina Machina, Króót Juurak, etc.). As declared by the group’s new stable member Anat Ben David, there are no limits of form or content, there is no method, but only a philosophy of the unfinished and DIY (do it yourself), whereby the artistic process identifies with its product in a neverending transformation. Nevertheless, just like a kind of magic, the results are unmistakebly and withouth fail very chicks on speed”, winking at the tradition of action painting, Viennese Actionism and Fluxus.
Yves Klein once declared that the female body is just and extention of his paint brush? Well, the COS take him by word, paint themselves blue and throw their naked bodies on the canvas and then sell it in an improvised auction right on the spot. Orelse, the punish the “male” gender by breaking vinile records on Douglas Gordon’s naked ass during a sound spanking session. Undressing is a way to embody the naked truth, denounce falsities and hidden power games, such as the fascination of luxury brands, which no one can resist (not even COS): it’s the voodoo CHANEL effect.
The fashion side of COS has grown into collaborations with independent fashion brands: including textile yardiges for Crystal Ball Japan in 2007/2008, DAA (Designers Against Aids) and Hennes and Mauritz “Fashion Against Aids” in 2008. For COS fashion always seems to have a further and broader scope:shoes can be transformed in electric guitars and haute couture hats can hide an amplifyer. At one point you may think that their message is very clear: you can’t fuck a shoe. And that’s exactly when the terrible COS will demonstate the opposite….Provocanti, irriverenti, travolgenti come una valanga, le chicks on speed (COS) presentano al Kustraum kreuzberg/Bethanien CULTURAL WORKSHIP NOW!, la prima retrospettiva in Germania della loro attività artistica dagli anni ’90 fino ai giorni nostri che si concluderà il 23 ottobre. Il collettivo fondato nel 1997 da Melissa Logan, Kiki Moorse (uscita dal gruppo) e Alex Murray Leslie, è partito da Monaco di Baviera come gruppo musicale sperimentale consacrato ai generi electroclash e elettropop per poi sconfinare in numerose altre discipline, dalla pittura, alla performance, al fashion design, dall’artgianato tradizionale alle nuove tecnologie, trascinandosi dietro una serie di creativi di tutte le provenienze, dai più famosi, tra cui Douglas Gordon, Jeremy Scott, Karl Lagerfeld, agli emergenti ( Vladimir Karaleev, Jasmina Machina, Króót Juurak, e tanti altri). Per ammissione di una nuova componente stabile del gruppo, Anat Ben David, non c’è nessun limite di contenuto, né di forma, nessun metodo, ma solo una filosofia del non finito e del DIY (do it yourself), in cui il processo artistico viene a coincidere con il suo prodotto, in perpetua trasformazione. Ciononostante, come per magia, i risultati sono immancabilmente e inconfondibilmente “very chicks on speed”, inserendosi in un discorso artistico che attrarversa l’action painting, l’azionismo Viennese e Fluxus. Yves Klein dichiarava che il corpo femminile era un’estensione del suo pennello? E le COS lo prendono alla lettera: eccole dipingersi di blu, imprimere i genitali su tele e poi metterle all’asta e ancora, punire il maschio, rompendo dischi in vinile sul sedere di Douglas Gordon nel corso di una sessione video a base di sculacciate sonore. Mettersi a nudo è un modo per mettere a nudo, smascherare, denuciare falsità e giochi di potere occulti, come il fascino esercitato dai grandi marchi di lusso ai quali neppure loro, in fondo, sanno sottrarsi: voodoo CHANEL. Nel campo della moda le COS hanno intrapreso progetti di collaborazione con numerosi designer ed etichette indipendenti tra cui Crystal Ball Japan in 2007/2008, DAA (Designers Against Aids) e Hennes and Mauritz “Fashion Against Aids” in 2008. Ma a guardar bene la moda non è mai fine a se stessa: le scarpe si trasformano in chitarre elettriche, i cappelli in amplificatori. Il messaggio non potrebbe essere più chiaro di così: you can’t fuck a shoe. Ma può essere dimostrato anche il contrario…
