Berlin Books: Book of clouds by Chloe Aridjis ( BLACK CAT)Berlin Books: Book of clouds by Chloe Aridjis ( BLACK CAT)

To a Parisian friend (thank-you Georgiana) we owe the discovery of Book of Clouds , Chloe Aridjis’ valuable first work of fiction based in Berlin. Whereas in France the book has been awarded the prestigious “Prix du premier roman ètranger”, here one doesn’t hear much about it. Maybe because it focuses on some not-so-reassuring aspects of our beloved “capital of the cool”? Berlin is seen through the sharp eyes of Tatiana, a mexican student whose prolongued stay turns into a voluntary exile. The job of transcribing the history lessons of an old professor, the isolation and progressive alienation lead her to abandon the well known artsy-party scene to dig into the dark and unsettling past of the city. A few layers of plaster will never hide the war’s scars. The same way, the emblematic attempt of Tatiana to cancel the chalk scores on the walls of an underground bowling track, once belonged to the SS, turns out to be not only useless, but also harmful. The Book of clouds tells the story of a fleeting encounter between different solitudes – Tatiana’s, a freaky young woman, Dr. Weiss’, a nazism and DDR expert, and Jonas Kranz’s, metereologist from Marzan – which culminates into an episode of abominable and gratuitous violence, thus confirming the paranoid fears of the protagonist. The evocative atmospheres of the book, suspended between past and present, reality and imagination, are magically trasmitted to the reader, who will for quite a while remain under their spell.

With her involving writing Chloé takes us to another side of Berlin, the one we all are trying to forget… Brrr…
